More Toads Mission Belle 1/15

A Report from Bloody Decks  from the Mission Belle

Yellowtail Jan. 15,2014.jpg

Went out yesterday on the Mission Belle. About 23 anglers on board. Could not have asked for a better day to get on the water. Great bunch of guys and a few gals as well. 2st stop and we got the 1st yellow. The only one. I had a scale with me so I asked the guy who caught it if he wanted to see what it weghed. Came in at 32#! On the next stop I hooked up on a big fish. It made a couple of runs pulling 17#s of drag! unbelevable how strong these fish are. 6X scambled egg. It was nice to get one early.
We made stops when we would mark a few and picked away at them all day getting a couple at a time. Finally late in the day we got on a small schgool and boated about 7 or 8 fish. I got my 2nd fish on this stop. A little bigger than the 1st YT. About 34# on a 7X mint. We got around 25 fish for the day. Had a blast on a Tranx PG and a new Phenix Hybrid 809 XH I recently picked up.

Can't say enough about the crew and captain. At one point on my 2nd fish I had 4 or 5 lines one me at one time and thought the fish was a gonner but the captain was on deck having fun with us and got me clear.

A great time for sure and in the middle of winter

BFT Beauties
by Indy Crew

Good evening to everyone from the Independence.
Our first day of fishing was not by any means a
barn burner, but I can say we saw plenty of fish
around to make you want to spend some time
around here. As far as catching goes, we tagged
28 yellowfin tuna, 18 to 30 lbs. and 2 bluefin tuna
120, and 140 lbs.. We did see good sign of these
bigger bft, but getting a bite was tough. The weather
is just beautiful, and we are going to camp out here
for another day to see if the fish gods can give
up some more of these beauties to us. Check out
our face book page for some photos of today’s hot action,
and please wish us luck for tomorrow, Jeff and the Indy crew

Ryan Bostian gives his report for fishing at the Coronado Islands
Location:
by Ryan Bostian

Ryan Bostian called in from the San Diego with a report from

the Coronado Islands. "The boat is on the way back with
28 Yellowtail and 50+ Barracuda. Coronado Islands had a down
week last week with some funky conditions that moved in.
Starting yesterday we started to see some very nice water.
The fish counts today definitely reflect the better conditions.
I'm predicting a very good week next week. Tomorrow's load
for Sunday looks very light if you'd like to come join us.
You can call the landing for reservations at 619-224-3383.

You can always BOOK ONLINE.

Don't Fall In

A Great Catch on the Excel ala Fishing Videos.Com  Thank you Bill for the Great Reports

“We made a move last night with hopes of finding greener pastures,” wrote Excel skipper Justin Fleck April 3. “Unfortunately all that we found were nasty, aggressive sharks that ate most of our wahoo and destroyed some tuna. We did manage to sneak a dozen or so skins and nine good grade tuna past the "tax man.” Big fish honors goes to Jonathan Jeffers for his 237.6-pounder caught on a PL68 right at dark. Hopefully there are a few more of those around. The good news is that we still have a lot of time left and the weather is coming down all the time.”

Hola Compas,

We spent the last week down at Las Cruces, the conditions were nice and we found some biters.  This trip is always my favorite because it is really fun to get all the kids on some good fish.  We found some really nice yellows and a few beastly sized amberjacks, all on jigs.   After getting freight trained a couple of times in the rocks, I started jigging with 80#.  There were still fish every day that just ruined us in the rocks.  Along with the jacks, we picked up a few nice cabrilla and pargo.  There were lots of whales around, including a huge sperm whale that swam by to  show us her tan line.

Some pics...

We are on the board for 2013! Got to the islands around 7am on Sat 3/16 and we skipped getting bait since the word was they were chewing the iron.

We fished middle grounds dropping yoyos here and there. Our first hook up came at 830 and our second at around 9. We just kept moving around, dropping irons, and winding. Our 3rd hookup came around 1030 and we landed two out of three. We headed for home around 2. All in all we felt pretty lucky because we didn't see anyone else hook any. Makes the sore arms from yoyoing all day well worth it.

All fish bit the scrambled egg salas 6x. The two were landed on 40lb set ups. The one that was lost was on 25lb.

Spring has Sprung!!!!

THE YELLOWS ARE BITING:

Just letting you know that the San Diego had 30 yellows in the 18 to 30-pound range on board at one P.M. today and is still fishing. Skipper Ryan Bostian said that there are some big spots of fish around. Most of them are yo-yo fish; however there were several caught on surface iron this morning also. Things are looking up!”

The Malihini is also catching quality yellowtail at the islands today, according to Ollie at H&M Landing (619) 222-1144. Skipper Mike Schmidt reported a dozen fish of quality onboard, with many lost to overly light tackle used by passengers.

Angler was Al Porter, first time fishing for tuna or wahoo, He rented all
his equipment from the boat, I let him throw my set-up that morning while I
ate breakfast.

Al is a fishing guide from the Yukon! Loved the reel and was amazed at the
power of the fish! He told me something I will never forget " these fish if
you tied them tail to tail with a Salmon , the Salmon would drown in 20
yards"

On The Yig - Ala Bill Roecker Oceanic Videos Current Condtions

Mark Pisano brought his Independence home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing November 10 after an eight-day trip with 29 anglers aboard.

Their story was much the same as others recently. The fishing was good, and the catch was mixed species, typical for fall eight and ten-day trips. Jim Kostelecky of Pasadena won first place for his 79.8-pound yellowfin tuna. He said it bit on his chrome Salas 6X Jr. jig tied to 40-pound Big Game line and 80-pound Izorline spectra. He fished with an Avet JX reel and a Seeker 875 rod. Tom Kroes of Tipton won second place for a 54.8-pound tuna, and posed the Jim.Terry Watkins of San Diego won third place for a 48-pound dorado, but failed to appear for the jackpot shot.

Today we missed on the tuna, but found a nice area holding lots of different grade yellows.
We ended up catching yellowtail that weighed anywhere from 6-50lbs and Bill Cashman was very happy with his 35lb fish caught on a Salas 6xjr.

Takers on the Broadbill

kingsmill

First blood on the boom- Took Dan Loros, who built the beautiful custom tank in my transom, out for some local sea bass fishing to try to get him his first fish. Todd P. (Newport Bait Barge) texted me that they had a load of mini squids in the receiver, so I decided to give it a try. Fished a few hours Saturday morning, Dan caught one big black and then later lost a nice white. Went in early to recoop and pick up the old man (WB). Got set up early eve and just before dark Dan's got one on. A 59.4# hits the deck. Nice job Dan. Sat it out and got one more bite, a 57.5#. Thanks for the text Todd, those mini baits did the job. That tank had 1000+ one to three inch squids and not a single clog in 36 hours. Awesome tank Dan, if anyone needs custom work on there rig, Dan does beautiful work (check out photo) The thing is too nice for the boat!
