Big Tuna Cake, Wahoo Frosting

It is that time of year again for the Grand Prize Exotics down south off the Lower Banks and down to the Lower Lower Zones. I ran into Paul Sweeney in Pt Loma one morning scoping out the Long Range Boats Offloading their prized catches. Check out this great trip report from the Red Rooster III that Bill and Paul made with the Accurate Crew and a star studded cast down to Clarion. Thank you Paul and Bill for another great report

The Red Rooster III

A nice report from the RRIII

Nov. 15, 2011

Good evening folks. We had a great day today. 54 tuna and what a great grade of fish. Average is about 150 pounds with some bigger and some smaller. Fish up into the 190's and one fish 245 caught by Denny Hill. His personal best before that was a 140 lb. he caught yesterday. He made a big jump scoring that cow. We did have a couple other chances at possibly cow's but no luck. Maybe tomorrow. What great fishing so far.

Good evening folks. We had a fun day at the Island. Things started slow but when we got on the fish it picked up with long drifts on fish from 120 to 180 pounds. The morning brought smaller fish 60 to 90 pounders but also brought this 270 pound tuna caught by Alan Walbridge. We did hook another big one but it fell off. No daily JackPot today but Bill Roecker had a great first tuna prize that included a 5 star certificate . Seagar line and Salas jigs. Tomorrow we may have another pot. Oh Yah, Jack gave a ten pack of Salas jigs for the first tuna on the deck. Sweet!

50 tuna today and hoping for more tomorrow.

Couple ‘O Cows

CharterMaster Fred Fukunaga with a Nice One on the Star! Moo Moo!

Today's photo's features southland fishing legend Fred Fukunaga with his 203-pounder coming over the rail,” wrote Royal Star skipper Tim Ekstrom November 7, noting chartermaster Larry Fancher also managed a 179-pound tuna. “These, and a few others, were the day's highlights. As for the rest of the day, and the rest of our anglers, it was a no go.

“There were a few odd dorado and an occasional big tuna boil to maintain enthusiasm for the effort but sloppy weather and brutal fishing conditions combined into quite a character test. Enduring the challenge while awaiting the big reward is pretty much synonymous with giant yellowfin tuna fishing. It is to be expected. These are not typically doled out to any and all. Certainly there are those times when everyone gets in on the act; those are the occasions we live and strive for. But, scratch mode is built in to this fishery; time at the rail with the right equipment in hand is the only way to produce results. And even then one's number does not always come up. Often times the fish gods are harsh, and do not appear impartial. Such is fishing.

“For us those strived for results were scant today. Better than nothing though; five happy anglers have a big ingot of swimming gold perfectly spiked, bled, and dressed resting the RSW tank, but our aspirations are far greater. The positive news is that we see plenty of sign around; at least enough to convince me that we have a chance at a good hit tomorrow and beyond. The quality is what we came for, and the setting is ripe for plenty more.”

Young’s Tackle Trip - JACKPOT on a 6xJr

Independence docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing September 17 after a seven-day charter with 31 anglers riding with skipper Jeff DeBuys. The group had near-limits of yellowtail, plenty of dorado and some tuna and bottomfish.

“We fished down The Ridge and offshore,” said Jeff. “The weather was great; hot and flat calm.”

One of the anglers aboard was Brandon Hayward of WON.

“Uncle Sam was wide-open,” he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. “They ate all our iron. I got some on the mint Candy Bar and the blue swirl 6X surface jigs. The bass, bit, too. It was good fall fishing.”

Joe Overstreet of Rancho Palos Verdes won first place for a 37.8-pound yellowtail. He said he bagged it with a blue swirl Salas 6X jig on 50-pound blue Izorline, and Avet LX and a Calstar 700 H rod.

Don Gallacher of San Diego won second place for a 31-pound yellowtail, and David Dolder of Lakewood won third place for an 87-pound gulf grouper.

7 Days of Fishing on the American Angler

Alijos Wahoo Line up

Hey Gang

Check out the images from our recent 7 Day Trip on the American Angler out of Pt Loma CA.

We are back from our 7 day trip on the AA. The Offshore Grounds, Cedros, Benitez, The Ridge, and Alijos Rocks. Not much on the Tuna, but a Grip of Yellows, and a few Wahoo at the Rocks. The weather was stellar for the entire trip barley getting a touch of spray on the windows of the Wheelhouse.

A whale shark managed to swim into our chumline on the Ridge and swam by to show off her Tan Line!
